Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at itsallaboutthesash@hotmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

’FOTF’  is an acronym for ‘Fashions on the Field’

‘IAATS’ is an acronym for ‘It’a All About The Sash’

Fashions on the Field is the name given to most best dressed competitions held at race courses throughout Australia. Other names it can be called within Australia and overseas include: Style Stakes, Fashion Stakes, Style Awards, Best Dressed, Fashions In The Field (FITF), Hat Contest and many more!

Many countries host Best Dressed competitions including:

- Australia

- New Zealand

- Ireland

- United Kingdom

- UAE (Dubai World Cup)

- South Africa

- USA

- Canada

Other countries may also hold similar competitions!

FOTF/Best dressed competitions can be held at many events including

- horse races

- polo

- state/country fairs

- harness racing

- carnivals

- luncheons/high teas

Many other events!

Maintaining a calendar of upcoming events is a huge task as dates are always changing/race meets cancelled/transferred etc, so instead we post a list of each weeks upcoming events to our Instagram Story (also saved to the highlights) & Facebook wall.

We welcome clubs to tag us in their advertising so we may share their upcoming events to our Instagram & Facebook walls.

We suggest that you check each clubs website & social media pages for upcoming events including updates, themes, guidelines and timings. Many race clubs hold FOTF at their 'Cup' day events and some on their 'Ladies' day. Other clubs hold FOTF even more regularly!  It is really best to check with each individual club to see what they have on offer.

Within Australia, checking each states racing board website for their race day calendar is a great starting point. We have a link to some racing authorities calendars/fixtures on this site under ‘Racing Authorities Links’.

You can also search through It’s All About The Sash on Facebook & Instagram to discover photos from past events and give you an indication about which events each club holds FOTF.

If there is a specific judge you are interested in, please contact them directly to check their availability and requirements.

We also welcome clubs to advertise for judges directly on our group Facebook wall with an expression of interest including event details if you do not have a specific judge in mind.

First check each clubs social media & webpages to see if they have advertised any guidelines/rules. If they do not have any advertised, contact each club directly.

FOTF is organised at a club level, so guidelines/rules (if any) are set out by each club.

We have compiled some of the most commonly used FOTF Guidelines on our FOTF Guides page. Click here to view: IAATS FOTF Guidelines

Head to our ‘All About FOTF' tab where you will find a range of publications about FOTF covering many topics.

If your question is not answered within these articles, post a question to our Facebook wall as the FOTF community is very supportive and like to help each other!

We would encourage anyone new to FOTF is to make sure they have the basics of a FOTF outfit ready i.e. outfit, millinery, shoes & accessories i.e. bag/clutch, jewellery etc. and to check that it is appropriate for the season. A good way of checking this is to look at the ‘It’s All About The Sash Seasonal Guidelines’  which are saved to our 'All About FOTF' section. You many even already know someone who is a regular competitor who may be able to advise you. The IAATS Facebook group is also a great place for all people to ask questions, no matter their experience level!

We would also encourage everyone to see if the club they are competing at has any specific themes, categories and/or guidelines/criteria for the event. Themes are becoming popular at certain events. If a club has specific guidelines or rules, do take these into consideration and remember that each club sets its own criteria (if they have any at all).

Once all of the technicalities are out of the way, looking at past entrants & winner’s photos of the event & other recent events is a good way to get a feel for what is happening in FOTF at that track and in the wider arena.

Don’t overthink your outfit as a ‘winning look’ & make sure you wear something you love, feel comfortable wearing and confident in, as when you love your outfit you are always a winner personally!

The most important thing is to just have a go & have fun! Wearing a smile, no matter how nervous you are feeling is so important as it's always your best accessory.

Introduce yourself to others & you will likely come away from the day having met some new friends and also having an enjoyable day. Don’t focus on the results of the FOTF competition and take away as many positives from the day as you can, as there will always be another event, another outfit to plan & more lovely friends to meet!

FOTF and racewear styling is an ever-evolving skill, so keep trying, learning and taking risks, after all, we are all life-long learners no matter how many competitions we enter!

'It's All About The Sash' is run by our Administrator, Emma Scodellaro as a passion project. We do not run FOTF competitions & do not offer sponsorship, however offer free promotion of all FOTF & racing fashion events. Please visit our Info for FOTF Organisers page for more information on how we can promote your event and share your FOTF imagery. This page also has links to some great resources you can view and download to help your club run its own FOTF event.  If you are interested in how Emma can assist your club, please visit her bio on this website Emma Scodellaro

’Trans-seasonal’ in fashions on the field refers to items of millinery or clothing that can be worn all year round, so across any season.
